DONT WATCH IF YOU'RE A MINOR, EASILY OFFENDED, OR HAVE A WEAK STOMACH! some info: - the rat has a battery access hatch made out of velcro on its back, but i forgot to film how i sew it in - sorry! - the white stuff on my hands is talcum (powder inside the gloves i was wearing during skinning). - if you solder a battery, make sure you do it quick - if the battery is exposed to heat from the soldering gun for too long, it will EXPLODE! - you can buy feeder pets - rats, mice, and even rabbits and sometimes guinea pigs - at snake food stores. just browse the yellow pages. - last but not least: the original tutorial is by CANIDA from instructables.com (search for mouse taxidermy; she also did the access hatch and LED tutorial). i only altered it to my liking (LEDs not sticking out of the skull as much, "real" posture of the rat, and some different wiring techniques and stuff), but the main idea for all of this came from her! - any more questions? wanna do it yourself? go ahead and send me a message or comment on this video. :-)

bionerd23 Says:
May 20, 2008 - sure, i certainly do! that's why i donated my body to gunther von hagens, the german 'plastinator' that did the 'body worlds' exhibition. so, you'll be able to see me in an exhibition once i'm dead. :-)

May 21, 2008 - would the technique be the same for stoats/weasels? i've got a couple coming my way from a local gamekeeper. How do you cut round the eyes/ears? do you just cut close to the skull?
bionerd23 Says:
May 22, 2008 - yeah, i'd use the same technique for them. for the ears, you gotta cut through the cartilage tube as close to the skull as possible - for the eyes, you'll have to carefully cut off the eyelids (they're attached to the skull / flesh below).

Jun 18, 2008 - Hey, little question! What happen later to the skin? i mean, it gets hard and all ends like the animals in museums? or the animals stay like "squeezable". I'm a Taxidermist in Chiapas Mexico, but down here we use traditional techniques so i don't know what borax does to skin, great video, grettings from Mexico
bionerd23 Says:
Jun 19, 2008 - hi there! the skin will dry out if you use borax on it, just like in those museum exhibits. it's soft enough to press a button that turns the LED lights on and off though - i certified that in the next version of the rat, which now has a button on it's shoulder. :-) by the way, what techniques are you using for taxidermy? thanks!

Apr 22, 2008 - thank you! :-) actually, the next version of the rat does have a switch, belive it or not - i built it about two weeks after uploading this video. ;-) i do all the work in one day, as that's a lot easier - the skin gets dry like vellum and is not as easy to bend anymore. and nope, the skin seems to stay intact, even around the feet - my oldest taxidermy art is over four months old and still fresh, not rotting away or anything! borax ftw! :-D
