Jul 2, 2008 - The commentator says: "the risk of injury in the BMW 520i is low. The survival space remains almost fully intact despite the deformation continuing up to the passenger compartment."

Jul 3, 2008 - We have to remember that this BMW appeared in 1988, and is pretty good, in comparison chinese "new" cars are big shits.

Aug 29, 2008 - that's strong!, not as strong as a mercedes tho, the left front pillar got some damage, in w123's crash test from 1977, the pillar was intact, mercedes w124's pillar got some damage, but its the passenger cell that matters.
landstrasse36 Says:
Sep 8, 2008 - 64 km/h

Sep 23, 2008 - w123 was a full frontal test. i agree though they're both safe.

Sep 23, 2008 - yeah you're right, i didnt notice the difference, w123 was a full frontal crash, and i agree, they are both very safe...
Konjunkturflaute Says:
Oct 31, 2008 - I do not think the Bimmers`performance is statisfying. The pictures show a very considerable, dynamic deformation of the A-pillar,bending back the entired roof structure, and even the lasting deformation is high.Though loads on the passengers were rather modest in this test,it is quite obvious the structure of the car having been pushed to the very limit of its resistance. Some 5km/h more(equal to 20% more forces to withstand)would have almost certainly caused the collaps of the cabin.

Nov 4, 2008 - BMW's are some of the safest cars today and give them a thumbs up!

Nov 15, 2008 - The new 5 series received a poor side impact saftey rating. I prefer Audi saftey, even back then it was better.

Nov 29, 2008 - Crashtest performed by the german TUV in 1990, speed 54kmh. Though performing good for that era none of these cars, including the 2 best performing (Mercedes and Volvo), would survive in todays EURONCAP at 64kmh.
alexkvaskov Says:
Dec 2, 2008 - it did great but the new 5 series get a marginal rating from the iihs in their side test which is worse than many korean and japanese cars
landstrasse36 Says:
Dec 2, 2008 - Both BMWs and Audis are amazing cars. The Audi A6 in the year 1998 only got 3 stars Euroncap. every car company has at least one model that it made mistakes on. you can't judge a whole brand by just one car.
landstrasse36 Says:
Dec 2, 2008 - for the early 90s that was amazing performance. Just because it deforms slightly, doesnt mean it is at its limit. Look at the Citroën C4 Picasso, it is a great example of this.
landstrasse36 Says:
Dec 2, 2008 - Don't judge an entire brand with just one model.
