"For if what they have published is the Gospel of truth, and yet is totally unlike those which have been handed down to us from the apostles, any who please may learn, as is shown from the Scriptures themselves, that that which has been handed down from the apostles can no longer be reckoned the Gospel of truth."

Jan 17, 2008 - Okay, Irenaeus was an important figure defending the four main Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, John in the New Testament. And this is 130 years before Constantine. So YT atheists who claim Constantine picked them was wrong. Check, got it.

Jan 17, 2008 - This statement puts forth 2 conditions. (1. the gnostics produced the Gospel of Truth. 2. It is different.)If both conditions are met (and they are)then the last part of the statement is true(what is handed down from the apostles is not the Gospel of Truth).

Jan 17, 2008 - In 180 CE and later there was great flurry over the Gospels. Which to accept? Which to reject? Which are true? In your own experience, when do books become controversial? Is it when they first appear or is it 100 years later?

Jan 17, 2008 - Please note that Irenaeus quoted from Mark 1:2"as it is written in Isaiah the prophet." Most Bibles now read "As it is written in the Prophets" because verse 1:3 quotes Malachi. What does this tell you about the inspiration and preservation of the text?

Jan 17, 2008 - I should add that the date of 180 is the dating assigned by Christian historians. It becomes very apparent when reading Irenaeus, that these books were written at a much later date.

Jan 16, 2008 - "For if what they produce is the Gospel of Truth, and is different from those which the apostles handed down to us, those who care to can learn how it can be shown from the Scriptures themselves that [then] what is handed down from the apostles is not the Gospel of Truth."
