Jan 6, 2008 - Not for the most part. I replaced a couple on the motor control because I had them on hand. I'll know once I listen to it if it's going to need any others.

Jan 6, 2008 - so pretty much those kind of caps rarely needs replacing.
Maxxarcade Says:
Jan 6, 2008 - In low voltage circuits, they are pretty reliable. Sometimes I replace them to increase stability; old caps are sometimes temperature sensitive, ceramic being the worst. I prefer not to use them to couple audio signals. The most troublesome caps I've seen for audio coupling are tantalums though. They cause all sorts of random noise and crackling.

Jan 6, 2008 - oh yeah, i have a 1966 voice of music tube record player. everything worx, excepted the volume doesn't go all the way up. is it due to bad caps?

Jan 6, 2008 - Fantastic job, I know it will be well worth it when you are finished.

Jan 6, 2008 - Very likely, especially if they are wax-paper caps. The philco radio I rebuilt was very quiet and nasty sounding before the recap.

Jan 6, 2008 - well, it has a 4-sect. electrolytic cap, 1 ceremic, 1 film, and this 1 cap i guess thatz what it is. it looks like a rolled-up plastic with metal in-between the layers. the numbers on it are 22, + over-, 20%, 400v, 900, and it has leads on each ends. the other components are 4 carbon and 1 ceramic resistors, 2 potentiometers, 1 diode rect., 1 vacuum tube, and an audio transformer.

Jan 6, 2008 - Usually wax caps are a gold color and made of paper. Could be the tube as well. Do you have a tester?

Jan 7, 2008 - Coming along nicely! So the 3-wire grounded cordset you put on it: Was the frame grounded on it? I haven't looked yet on mine. Mine is just a 2-wire cordset, though mine does appear to have a replacement plug on it.

Jan 7, 2008 - don't have a tester at the moment, but it seems very useful.

Jan 7, 2008 - The ground wire was connected to the frame of the power supply, so I'm pretty sure the whole frame is grounded. Mine had a 3 wire cord, with a weird 220V plug. It had a 1 amp fuse like it would be set up for 220V, but the voltage selector was at 110V when I got it. I moved it to 120V and put a 2 amp fuse in.

Jan 6, 2008 - did the film and ceramic caps needed replacing too?
