Free Speech - Woman This Public Service Announcement (PSA) created by Mr. Mohammad Al Akkad & Mr. Hasan Nasarallah Al Hisa of The Jordan Center for Strategic Studies, starts with a girl against a black backdrop. She has her back to the camera. Voices tell her from off camera -- "Don't talk about sex! Don't talk about religion! Don't talk about politics!" She takes her hands up to her ears, turns to camera and says, "Respect Your Mind. Express Yourself." A message comes on the screen in simple text- "Freedom of Speech. For A Better Future." The JCSS created the PSA to encourage the public to speak their minds on a variety of issues. The organization runs surveys and polls for many of their studies, so they want to encourage open dialogue. There is also a second PSA using a male actor in the same scenario. URL: www.css-jordan.org Music and sound design provided by Nabeel Bahy (of Kuwait) Background: This PSA was produced locally in Amman, Jordan as part of a media workshop, entitled "Media, Activism and Democracy," led by Barefoot Workshops in partnership with The Middle East Partnership Initiative (MEPI). twenty-six participants, mostly women and youth, learned how to write, shoot, produce and edit, thirty-second noncommercial videos (Public Service Announcements), to raise awareness about social issues. The goal of the workshops was to increase discussion, debate and civic participation in the Middle East. The PSAs are available in Arabic and English to broadcasters and other organizations that wish to distribute them "rights-free" on television and the Internet.
