WALKER -- Grandville High School senior Henry Ditmar V was always trying to help. So when he learned that a busboy had suddenly quit at his mom's workplace, Sayfee's Restaurant, he volunteered to cover the shift for a night. Friends and family of the 17-year-old Ditmar, killed in a Saturday traffic crash, said they will remember his generous and outgoing spirit. Ditmar's 16-year-old girlfriend was driving him to the restaurant when icy roads caused her to lose control of her car as she traveled south on Wilson Avenue SW near Butterworth Drive after 5 p.m. Police said the teen, who was not identified, crossed the centerline and struck a northbound pickup. "He would know what you needed, and before you could say anything, he was already doing it for you," said his grandfather, Henry Ditmar III. "He was an extremely loving, caring young person -- a nice Christian young man." After graduation, Ditmar planned to study videogame production at Davenport University to remain close to his family, his grandfather said. He was an active member of his church, Grand Rapids First Assembly of God, and was a member of the Grandville Orchestra. "He was very sensitive to other people's feelings," his grandfather said. "He was comfortable spending time with kids his age and with adults, but playing with younger kids -- 3- or 4-year-olds -- wasn't below him." Henry also enjoyed camping with his family and hunting with his father. The school's crisis team was scheduled to meet early today to help students cope with the loss. "He always had a lot of people that cared about him," said orchestra director Matthew Bridges, who worked with Ditmar for seven years. "He'll be missed like I can't even tell you." In addition to his grandparents, Henry Ditmar V is survived by parents, Kristie and Henry Ditmar IV; his sister, Geneva; and many cousins. Died January 26th 2008
