This aria was one that first brought Pavarotti to attention at Covent Garden. Flores is more than capable as he hits the notes with ease. I was there the night this was recorded and for me it was the one highlight in a very bad evening. The opera was ruined by the woman next to me who was cackling in hysterics at the slightest bit of slapstick on the stage. By the time this aria came along I was in a very bad mood. I left shortly afterwards at the interval, otherwise I would have cut that woman's throat during the 2nd act.

Jan 22, 2008 - Yes, he's good. Reminds me of Pavarotti, but Pavarotti's songs just seemed more original opera-ish if you know what I mean. Hopefully this guy will progress though.. he seems good for now though.

Jul 21, 2008 - Yes, perhaps the staging is regarded as "corny", but this opera is certainly meant to be light and a bit frivolous. The entire production is whimsical and quite charming.. :-) As for the comparisons to Pavarotti - Flores is truly a high lyric tenor in the bel canto tradition. Pavarotti has always been a bit heavier and with a "larger" voice. There is absolutely nothing "wrong" with JDF's voice now, he's simply a different fach,& doing a BRILLIANT job of singing the right roles for his voice.

Jul 30, 2008 - It's a shame that your experience at La Fille was so horrible! I saw it at the Met earlier this year, and it was the best opera experience I've ever had! I agree that Pavarotti is one of the best singers of this aria, but if Juan Diego Florez is this good at "Ah, Mes Amis" at this stage in his career, imagine him in about ten years or so!
