Researchers have created a substance so black it absorbs more than 99.9 percent of light. The substance has a total reflective index of 0.045 - which is more than three times darker than the nickel-phosphorus alloy that now holds the record as the world's darkest material. They say that the material could be used in solar energy conversion."You could think of a material that basically collects most of the light that falls into it". The report will be published in an upcoming issue of the journal "Nano Letters".-Reuters

Jan 20, 2008 - I would also ask you the same.Perhaps what I'm talking about could be about "something",like with this nanotube technology,to make better solar collectors for people to use or have?

Feb 21, 2008 - there is one thing i don't quite understand. if almost 100% of the light is absorbed, then the material should almost be invisible to the naked eye. the only way our eyes can see the things around us is by the light that reflects off of them into our eyes. i might be mistaken though... i wish the freaking news reports would at least show a picture of this material!

Feb 24, 2008 - @dmix09 You're mistaken, If the material absorbs 100% of the light, then it will appear completely dark. For it to be invisible, it has to absorb 0% and let all the light through it pass through. For eg. see glass. It allows almost all light to pass through freely. So, it is almost invisible.
