The film builds to a feverish pitch of suspence with Rankin's wife finaly realising the full horror of the truth and the scene is played out very nicely I might add By both Welles and Young. I know I have probably run the shadows subject into the ground but at this point of the film the shadows dominate everywhere as does the cold and snow which brings about a feeling of closing doom and despair like winter's very chill itself and one is reminded of the quality that exsisted in filmmaking back in those days and the lack of it in modern movies. Today the atmosphere of shadows and light have been lost to the CGI EFFECTS which dominate most films and usualy ruin any possible tension or fright and Film Noir has almost completely died out aside from the Coen Brothers who seem clearly influenced by Welles works.

Jan 19, 2008 - I know even as the villain Welles is always likable which adds the best twist i think. Nothing quite as disturbing as someone soo nice being evil.
