This rumbling figure is played in straight 8th-note rhythm and is situated in the first position. It makes use of a driving approach which demands an all-downstroke approach, a precursor of the hard rock and metal rhythm style. Our lick is based on an open E minor chord shape, and it is useful to picture this fingered form when performing the phrase. The E minor shape yields the E5 power chord on the lowest two strings of the guitar. E5 is used consistently during this lick and is embellished by the added G note on the sixth string. Today's lick has an ambiguous E and/or E minor sound, and is a distinct variant of the boogie pattern found in blues, rock and roll, and R&B.
