Sharingan and Rinnegan exist in order to control the bijuu. Hence, the reason why the Uchiha clan was wiped out, because they have the mark of the bijuu in their clan. (?) Itachi caused the destruction due to his awareness of Madara's existence and this information. Itachi's eyes deteoriated could also be due to abusive use as Madara's container, not just MS.
